A degree in Molecular Biology sitting on the shelf started the Science Fairy journey. At That Science Fairy we communicate science through hands on activity creation. Since 2016, That Science Fairy has generated over 600 STEM activities for young children. We share these on social media, in trainings, and directly in the Colorado Springs community.
Ours is a mobile business model traveling from childcare to childcare (mostly family childcare home settings). We bring a tub of materials related to an everyday phenomenon like
- Nutrients
- Spinning
- Paper Technology
The 4-6 STEM activities involved in a Project cover the domains of gross motor, language, social emotional learning (SEL), musicality, place-based, and sensory experiences. As an ECE professional, you know it when you see it.
Backstory
Entrepreneurship was natural for my personality type. Count me in on big vision and creative ways to accomplish a task. My childhood church mentor surrounded me in all things crafty. My amazing science teacher brought art into freshman biology. I was enthralled.
Working for small organizations after university gave a unique set of skills to employ, this time for business. Mostly, though, I wanted to be a mom.
That Science Fairy has given me a daily purpose to structure life for my own two children. The knowledge-base of women who have worked with children for many decades remains a great asset. I make full use of my resources of smart device and a car. I continually have to learn new technology, keeping my resume current.
I get the best of the “working mom and stay-at-home-mom” life operating from my garage and over naptime.

Frequently Asked Questions

How did you start this side hustle

I wanted a socially impactful side hustle to support being a stay-at-home mom (SAHM), but to still get the emotional and vocational benefits of outside work. By default I was a science communicator struggling with the written word. So with the resources of a car, garage space, and a smart device, I started this business focusing on tactile STEM experiences for the youngest learners.
Would you come to my group?

Our work is for care settings in El Paso County, CO. See our Activities Ala Carte page for options worldwide. Locally, we come on location for your field trip, homeschool enrichment, adult day center, library program, festival, school STEM night, trunk-or-treat, summer camp, VBS week, graduation party, or a just-to-celebrate STEM party.
How do you measure success?

Walking in the door to the excited voices of children after they have experienced a project before = success. Improved fine motor skills, peer collaboration, persistence, numeracy, and creative problem-solving are all great too.
